Choose the right capacity for the pool pump

Mark Toth

A pool pump is to the pool what the heart is to the body. It may not be very visible, but it is an absolute prerequisite for keeping everything alive. Therefore, it is important to think a little extra from the start about what kind of pump you choose and how powerful it should be.

The primary function of a pool pump is to pump the water out of the pool, clean it through a filter, and send it back again. And to be able to do that, it must be adapted to its task. So how do you know which pump to choose? Well, the pool pump's capacity is related to two things. First, how big your pool is (i.e., how much water needs to be circulated). Second, how the pump is positioned in relation to the pool's water outlet (the skimmer).

In short, the pool pump must be able to pump a quarter of the water volume in one hour. The capacity is clearly indicated on the pool pump as cubic meters per hour (m3/h). So when you know how many cubic meters of water you have in the pool and divide that by four, you also know which pumps to choose from.
It is a bit more difficult to understand how many horsepower (or kilowatts) are required to get the right water flow. This, of course, depends on how far the water has to move, i.e., the distance between the outlet and the pool pump. But also how high the water must be pumped, i.e., how high the pump is relative to the pool. Here, we think you should get help from us or another expert to get the calculation right. But as a guideline, one can say that for a pool measuring 4×8 meters and 1.5 meters deep, a pool pump with about 1 horsepower (or 0.75 kilowatts) is usually needed.

When it comes to your pool, the pump is something that just has to work. And that goes without saying. A pool pump with too small a capacity has to work much harder than one that is properly adjusted. And the result is that it will break down prematurely if it is too weak.

So choose carefully, and get help from us to find the right pool pump from the start. Then you can swim in peace and enjoy your pool for many years to come.
