Ting to consider before building a pool

  • Many believe that building a pool is difficult, but if you are a bit handy, you can do it and save up to 50%. Although you do not need a building permit or land permit when building a pool, a certain amount of common sense is still required when constructing a pool.

    • The first step may be to consider the pool's location and size.
    • Check for any cables and pipes on the website ledningskollen.se
    • Talk to neighbors in the area who have built a pool about soil conditions/groundwater levels
    • Consider whether you have time to build the pool yourself or if you want to hire a partial or complete contractor.
    • Read about different pool designs, their advantages and disadvantages
    • Request a quote and talk to a pool expert
    • Book a home visit

Who is responsible for building a pool?

  • When constructing a pool, the customer always has the final responsibility for the pool's location and for checking that there are no pipes (water, electricity, gas, fiber, etc.) on the property where the pool is to be placed. Protecting the pool with a fence or purchasing approved pool protection is also the customer's responsibility once the pool construction is complete.
During the construction period, the person building the pool is always responsible for marking off the pool area to keep unauthorized persons out, so that children, animals, or others do not get injured by falling into the pit.

Pool location

  • The placement of the pool is always a discussion, where the homeowner knows the area best and usually already has suggestions for the location. The pool is a concern that should not be hidden. Things to consider when placing it:

    • Where does the sun rise and set? You want to be able to see the sunset from your pool while sitting on the steps or bench.
    • The pool is beautiful to look at, even in the evening when the lights are on, and it is good if the pool is visible, even from the living room.
    • It is most natural if the pool's location follows the placement of the house.
    • The placement of the pool lights is always on the same side as the house, so the light shines away from the house.
    • Always ensure at least 2.20 m around the pool so the pool cover can be slid away (the recommendation is 3 m).
    • Consider where the filtration system should be placed (up to 10 m from the pool). Verandas, storage rooms, or other buildings are good places to locate the pool filtration system.

There are many different pool designs on the market:

  • Wooden frame with lining fabric (set)

  • Sheet metal frame with lining material (set)

  • Thermopool with liner (set)

  • Fiberglass pools (the entire tub)

  • PP Pools (the entire tub)

Many pool designs are outdated, so at Pooltime we focus only on two pool designs: PP Pool (full pool) and Thermopools (kits).

PP Pool is delivered as a complete pool, where you get premium materials and the latest technology in pool construction. Thermopool is delivered as a kit, where you build the pool and cover the inside with a liner fabric.

How long does it take to build a pool?

When building a pool, time is an important factor, as you usually have a date that fits, and you want to be able to swim as soon as possible. If you build a pool in the spring, midsummer is usually the decisive date for everything to be ready by then.
How long does it take to build a pool?

  • PP Pool – construction time 1-3 weeks

The PP Pool is delivered as a complete shell, so the actual construction time takes 2-3 weeks from the moment you start digging the pit until you can swim in the pool. The excavator usually begins preparing the ground 2-10 days before the pool is delivered. If there is high groundwater or unstable soil (such as sand), you need to cast a base slab. The reason is that groundwater can carry material from beneath the pool, which can cause settling if you don’t have a cast slab. With a cast slab, you start digging about a week before the pool delivery, create the base and drainage, shape the slab, and reinforce it before the concrete truck arrives. The base slab then needs to cure for about a week.
If the soil is hard clay without groundwater, a base layer and crushed stone as a foundation and drainage are usually sufficient. In this case, you start digging about 2-3 days before the pool delivery.

Once the pool is lowered into the pit, you can begin connecting lights, skimmer, and inlets. You can then immediately start filling it with water while filling the sides with dry mortar. The dry mortar is watered and turns into concrete as it cures. If you have access to two hoses, it can take 1-2 days to fill the pool.

  • Thermopool – construction time 8-12 weeks

At Thermopool, they start by making the foundation, drainage, shaping the slab, and reinforcement before the concrete truck arrives. The base slab then needs to cure for about a week. After that, they begin building the walls and reinforcing them. They cut holes for the skimmer, lights, and inlets and support the walls to prepare them for casting. Once the concrete truck has filled the walls with concrete, they need to let the walls cure for 4-6 weeks before they start installing the liner fabric and begin filling with water.

When is the best time of year to build a pool?

  • By building a pool in the autumn

Autumn is a very popular time to build a pool. The reason many choose to build a pool in the autumn is that everything else will be finished by then, and when spring comes, you can use the pool for an entire season. Builders are usually more available in the autumn, and many pool companies offer special discounts.

  • Byggeri af pool om foråret

Spring is usually a busy period for the pool industry. Many start thinking about pools when the sun comes out, and by then it is usually too late to finish the pool for the summer. Those who build pools in the spring will likely complete the pool construction by summer, but many things around it remain. Lawns that have been damaged by machinery will start to grow back, the terrace or tiles will be laid, etc. Most people who build pools in the spring can only use the pool for half a season that year.

Which pool size is the most popular?

  • The standard depth of pools is 1.5 m. This means you can swim in the pool while playing with your children.

    The most popular pool size is 4 x 8 m for larger plots and 3 x 6 m for smaller plots. There is also a size in between, which is 3.5 x 7 m, but this pool size is usually closer to 4 x 8 m in price than 3 x 6 m, which is why many choose 4 x 8 m.

You should be aware of how the pool size is measured. PP Pool and Thermopools measure the pool size on the INSIDE of the pool, while many fiberglass pools specify the measurement on the outside of the pool. Fiberglass pools also have an edge of about 10 cm, and the walls slope inward, so a pool of 3.5 x 7 m can have a swimming area of about 3 x 6 m.

How much does it cost to build a pool?

PP Pool is a premium material, also approved for food containers, so the material is much more expensive than for Thermopools. The PP Pool itself costs about 130,000 SEK for a 4 x 8 pool compared to the Thermopool, where the walls only cost about 30,000 SEK. In addition, there are costs for the filtration system, the stairs, the heat pump, and the pool cover.
