Maintenance plan for the pool – How to keep your pool in perfect condition

Daily tasks

  1. Remove debris : Use a net to remove leaves, insects, and other debris that may have accumulated on the water surface.
  2. Check water level : Ensure the water level is high enough for the skimmer to function effectively. A water level that is too low can affect water flow and cause issues with the pool pump .
  3. Test pH level : Keep the pH level between 7.2 and 7.6 to avoid eye irritation and optimize chlorine effectiveness. A balanced pH allows chemicals to work properly and prevents damage to pool equipment.

Weekly tasks

  1. Vacuum the pool bottom : Use a pool vacuum to clean the bottom of sand, gravel, and other debris. If you have an automatic vacuum, this can be done more frequently.
  2. Test chlorine and alkalinity levels : Chlorine levels should be between 1 and 3 ppm, and alkalinity levels should be between 80 and 120 ppm. These levels help keep the water clean and prevent the growth of bacteria and algae.
  3. Add algaecide : To prevent algae growth, you can add algaecide. This is especially important during warm periods when algae grow faster.
  4. Clean the pool filter : If the pool filter is dirty or clogged, it can affect circulation. Clean the sand, cartridge, or DE filter according to the manufacturer's instructions, usually once a week or when pressure rises.

Monthly tasks

  1. Adjust calcium hardness and cyanuric acid : Calcium hardness should be between 200 and 400 ppm to prevent damage to the pool surface . Cyanuric acid, or stabilizer, helps protect chlorine from being broken down by sunlight. The level should be between 30 and 50 ppm.
  2. Inspect equipment : Check the pool pump, filter, and heater for signs of wear or leaks. This can extend the equipment's lifespan and prevent major repairs.

Seasonal tasks

  1. Opening and closing the pool : Ensure that the pool is thoroughly cleaned and filled with fresh water if necessary when opening for the season . Make sure all pipes and pumps are properly drained when closing to avoid frost damage.
  2. Replace filter media : Replace the sand or DE powder in the filter at recommended intervals (usually every second or third year) to maintain effective filtration.
